Colophon
Definition (publishing)
A colophon is a publisher's statement that records key information about how a text was produced[1]. Historically, colophons often appeared at the end of manuscripts and early printed books[1] and could name the printer or scribe, identify the place of production, and provide a date or other details about the making of the book. In contemporary publishing, the colophon is frequently found in the front or back matter and may function as a compact "production note," listing elements such as typefaces, paper, printing method, binding, design[2], and sometimes environmental or edition statements. Even when brief, it serves as a formal record that ties the finished book to its material and editorial processes.
In addition to describing production facts, a colophon can signal a book's attention to craft by making design choices visible to the reader. Colophons also help standardize information that might otherwise be scattered across a title page, copyright page, acknowledgements, or design credits. Because they capture details that may vary from one printing to another, colophons can be useful for distinguishing between versions of the same work.
Purpose and use
Colophons help readers, librarians, and researchers trace a book's provenance and manufacturing choices[2], and they also serve a branding function by foregrounding design and production decisions. In book history and bibliography, colophons are especially valuable because they can supply evidence that is not always captured elsewhere in the volume, supporting identification and description of particular printings or editions[1].
Common elements
A colophon may include the publisher or printer, location, date, type and layout details[2], paper and binding specifications, and acknowledgment of contributors involved in production.
