Comp Titles
Definition

A comp title is a book used for comparison by authors similar to the one they are writing and/or publishing.
Why its Used
They are very important to writers and authors. Almost any author when writing a book uses comp titles to see there general audience to that book and uses it for comparison. Its also used when the content is comparable or the sales trends are expected to be similar. For your publishing team, comp titles are extremely important. The comps help editors making acquisition decisions to figure out who and how big the audience might be for a specific title. [1]Comp titles are asked to be used by the publishing companies very early into process, so they can figure out sales and retail for the book that's being published. The purpose of strong book comps is to make a realistic comparison between your work and someone else’s. Ideally, the author or book you’re choosing is thoughtful, rather than just a runaway bestseller.[2]
