Definition

This cover of a zine artistically expresses how many chose to express their political beliefs through this kind of written work. The edgy aura of the zine is seen throughout this piece.

A Zine, short for "fanzine", is a miniature version of a magazine that allows for a message to be spread or a voice to be expressed through this published piece. While most zines are self-published, they are usually seen as more of a piece of self-expression rather than a professional and empirical piece to be reflected upon.

Research

Zines are more than just a written art form, they are a way of communicating to the audience without being direct. For some, zines are a way of standing out against injustice. For others, they are a way to send a message or tell a short story. Zines are a smaller produced product. Yet, there is a way you can make a living or a business from them. The zine is a shorter way of conveying a more powerful message; and the length of the zine is what gives the message more meaning.

Zines have roots that date back to the 1930s, making it easier for the trend of zines to rise in the 70s to early 90's. With photocopier's emerging in the 60's, it was easier for zine makers to create a business out of their work. Zines typically are known for their edgy look and tone. However, zines can look like anything with a theme that just might apply to about anyone.
