A gatefold is a certain type of page in a magazine, book, or any sort of printed material that can fold inward, that looks like a gate or a door. Gatefolds are similar but also different to fold out pages. Gatefold pages have panels that fold inward from both sides, which hides part of the books content until you open them. While fold-out pages usually only fold out from one side of the book, forming a single panel. Gatefold are often use for things that require big illustrations and there would be more room on the paper to see stuff but also keep the book concise. You can think of the gatefold like a surprise inside the page, then you wont read until you open it. It's great for keeping information away from the reader until they either finish that page or are instructed in the book to open it. <ref>Fazli, Sabina, and Jasmin Assadsolimani. “Unfolding History: Gatefolds in Anniversary Issues of Fashion and Style Magazines.” ''Book History'', 2025, www.ivysci.com/articles/10250046__Unfolding_History_Gatefolds_in_Anniversary_Issues_of_Fashion_and_Style_Magazines</ref>

Gatefold are created by printing a bigger sheet of paper then the book can hold, then folding the page inward so it fits in the book normally. When the reader open the panel, it shows information that was not previously accessible unless opening up the fold. According to Fazli and Assadsolimani, gatefolds in magazines provide “expanded space for visual storytelling and dramatic presentation” (Fazli and Assadsolimani). Gatefolds make the book more exiting than just a normal book because you both do not whats exactly is behind the fold, and also makes the book more interactive for the reader.

=== Academic contexts ===
Gatefolds can be useful for academic books as they are able to show more detailed information or have a photo inside the gatefold that can explain what is said in the page with a caption. For example, a gatefold in textbooks can show an image of a certain piece of history that would not have enough room to fit on the page itself without a gatefold. They also let the reader explore the information more interactively to help the information sit in the brain and remember it easier.<ref>“Gatefold Book.” ''Openly Available Arts & Humanities Books'', University of Utah, oab.lib.utah.edu/artist_book_term/gatefold-book/. == E-book ==
An e-book is a shorter term for a digital version of a book that lives inside your iPhone or any electronic device you want to read a book on. They are made instead of regular books with print on paper; e-books are made with glowing pixels on the screen that turn into text. Scholarly definitions describe it as a normal paper book equivalent in a digital version.<ref name=":0">“E-Books.” ''ScienceDirect Topics'', Elsevier, 2002, www.sciencedirect.com/topics/psychology/e-books.</ref> E-books can be made by reusing books that have already been created over hundreds of years and translated into the e-book version, or can be made primarily on the e-book itself, and vice versa. E-books replicate many features of a regular book, like text, pages, and a table of contents; they must be used on a digital form to be considered e-books.<ref name=":1">Zhang, Tao, Xi Niu, and Marlen Promann. “Assessing the User Experience of E-Books in Academic Libraries.” ''College & Research Libraries'', vol. 78, no. 3, 2017, crl.acrl.org/index.php/crl/article/view/16713/18220.</ref> E-books are also great options for people with disabilities, as there are many options to fit anyone's specific needs. For example, you can enlarge the text as much as you need, which is not readily available on books that are on paper. This makes e-books more accessible to people who might have visual impairments, to find e-books a much better option.

==== Academic Contexts ====
In academic contexts, e-books are perfect because they allow you to see a wide range of books without physically having to go to the library yourself. E-books also make it much easier, especially to use their search engine, so you do not have to go looking around for physical books, and just search up a keyword and find many e-books on that topic.<ref name=":1" /> E-books also make it easier to look up certain passages by searching for certain sentences or words in the book, and you could be brought straight to the page or pages on which it is said. This is great, especially for academic purposes, if you need to find a specific quote or are trying to find a good quote for an assignment.<ref name=":1" />
